A few tips I've picked up over the years:
1) Although they will survive in the smaller pots, many people feel they do better in a larger pot. After you have had your VFT for a year or more, take them out of the 4" pot you bought it in and put it in a 6" pot, or larger. It would be best to wait until they are dormant sometime in December or January (In the northern hemispher).
2) Put them in a 50/50, peat /sand mixture. Although that's not the only recommended mix, it's a pretty standard one. Don't bother taking them out of their current soil mix, unless you don't think it's appropriate.
3) Sit them in an inch or so of PURE water. Some ways to accomplish this is to put them in a pot with a large saucer, or a 6" pot, with a hole in the bottom, and put that pot in an 8" pot without a hole. Then you can have several inches of water in the bottom of the 8" pot.
4) Allow them to go dormant! Put them outside in a cold garage, basement, or even a fridge if you have to. I just leave mine right where they are. I'm Zone 8 or 9 as an FYI.
5) They like a lot of sun.
6) Disclaimer: What works for me may not work for you.
