Well, unless you built a strip mall on it, you probably found their Achilles heal, WATER.
Yours' probably didn't die from too much water. It might have died from too little, but it most likely died from BAD water. Unless you have incredibly pure water coming out of your tap, you should use reverse osmosis water, rain water, or distilled water. Bogs and swamps are natures purifiers and VFT's demand very good water. The stuff you probably get from the tap is full of salts and other minerals. The build up of these impurities are probably what killed your plant.
The other possibility is it died AFTER you threw it out because you THOUGHT it was dead.
VFT's. like many plants, and many other CP, require a dormancy. In other words, they need to hibernate like a bear in winter. Oh, it might not be as severe as some plants that die back to the ground, but they do need cold weather and a shortened daylight period. Your plant may have gone into hibernation and you thought it was dead!
If you live in a place that gets light frosts, you can grow them outside, where they can get cold in the winter!
I know some people from very warm areas that wrap the pot in plastic and refrigerate them. (make sure the soil is just slightly damp before you wrap them up) Otherwise, find a way in winter to get them in reduced temperatures, and lower light.
